NYC Handgun Permit Types
In New York City, the Police Department is tasked with issuing all handgun licenses in the city. Before you decide to obtain a pistol permit, it’s important to determine the best license for your individual needs. NYC handgun licenses come in several different types, designed to accommodate most personal and property protection needs:
Premises License
These licenses are issued for home and business owners, and legally empower those licensees to possess their firearms at their homes or businesses. This restricted license also enables those gun owners to transport their unloaded weapons and ammunition in secured containers both to and from hunting areas or firing ranges.
Carry Business License
This unrestricted license type empowers licensees to carry concealed handguns. The license is valid only for the named business, weapon, and address printed on the license, though it can be transferred if the license division’s commanding officer approves the request in writing.
Carry Guard License
This license is for security guards and other executive protection personnel and provides carrying privileges for one specific weapon. It empowers that security guard to carry the handgun during transport to and from any place of employment and during employment hours.
Limited Carry Business License
This restricted license provides specified limitations on the licensee’s carry privileges and requires the licensee to keep the weapon secured at the business location during all other times.
Special Carry License
This special license is issued only to persons possessing a basic county license that has been provided according to the NYS Penal Law terms of article 400. The special carry license is voided if that basic license is cancelled or revoked.
